This means that people with sickle cell disease have inherited two copies of the defective (or mutated) SCD gene, one copy from each parent. We have 46 chromosomes in each cell of our bodies. These chromosomes can be organized into 23 pairs. WebThese sickle cells tend to cluster together and can't easily move through the blood vessels. The cluster causes a blockage and stops the movement of healthy, normal, oxygen-carrying blood. This blockage is what causes the painful and damaging complications of sickle cell disease.
